The low chalumeau register is the dark one, the throat notes just under the break are the thin awkward ones, and the clarion above the break is brighter. Clarinet sheet music has to keep those three apart, in a soft chamber solo and in a band tutti.
Humming the contour swaps the covered low sound and the brighter register. Playback tells you which neighborhood the note actually lived in.

Dictation usually slips on the notes around the break. Placing them in the register you heard keeps a chamber solo from jumping early into the bright sound.

Chamber lines often sit exposed and soft. Band writing can be louder, doubled, and full of repeated figures. The page follows the clarinet that is in the track.

The staff is the pitches you hear, not the transposed band part. You get sounding pitches, then you transpose in your notation editor if you need a written part.
The register check only helps if you can hear the clarinet cross. A buried inner voice makes the throat notes guesswork.

A recital excerpt, a wind-quintet passage, or a band solo with the clarinet in front will behave better than a chord tone lost in the brass.
02
The landing turns clarinet on for you. Tick flute, oboe, or bassoon when the quintet should share the page, or choose Auto when every voice should be named.

Listen once in the low register, once in the throat, and once above the break. Download MusicXML or MIDI when those bars agree with the take.
“Clarinet sheet music that held the throat notes in the dark register saved our quintet rehearsal. We had been jumping the break early.”
“The band solo and the chamber excerpt wanted different shapes, and the page followed the one on the recording.”
“I took the sounding pitches into our notation editor and made the written part there.”
Flute is an air-and-octave question. Oboe is an exposed reed. Saxophones split across their own pages.
